About this Opportunity

To support researchers who have established their research identity to develop their capabilities, drive innovative programmes and become international research leaders.

Who Can Apply

Mid-career researchers who are already driving their own research, have completed one or two substantial periods of research after their initial research training, and have made important contributions to their area of research.
Researchers at eligible organisations, including eligible low- and middle-income country organisations, may apply.
Researchers on a permanent contract can request their own salary only if they are based in a low- or middle-income country and must obtain it from external grant funding.
Location change: from 29 October 2026, Wellcome will accept applications only from lead applicants at eligible administering organisations in the UK and in low- and middle-income countries in Africa, South Asia and South-East Asia. Applications submitted on or before 28 October 2026 are assessed under the current location rules.
