About this Opportunity

To support bold and creative research that delivers significant shifts in understanding related to human life, health and wellbeing.

Who Can Apply

  • Established researchers, or teams led by an established researcher, from any discipline who want to pursue bold and creative research ideas.
  • The lead applicant must have international standing as a research leader, experience of leading innovative research and a track record of managing and training others.
  • Teams usually have two to eight applicants. The primary location of the research, including leadership of the programme, must be in the UK, the Republic of Ireland and/or a low- and middle-income country.
  • Location change: from 29 October 2026, Wellcome will accept applications only from lead applicants at eligible administering organisations in the UK and in low- and middle-income countries in Africa, South Asia and South-East Asia. Applications submitted on or before 28 October 2026 are assessed under the current location rules.
