Wellcome Early-Career Awards

About this Opportunity

To help early-career researchers develop their research identity, skills and independence through innovative research programmes.

Who Can Apply

  • Early-career researchers from any discipline who are transitioning towards research independence and are ready to design and deliver their own research project.
  • A PhD (or equivalent higher research degree) passed by the date of application, or at least four years of research experience equivalent to a PhD. No more than three years of postdoctoral experience, unless other factors have affected your research career.
  • The administering organisation must be a not-for-profit higher education institution, research institute or healthcare organisation in the UK, the Republic of Ireland or a low- or middle-income country (excluding India and mainland China).
  • Location change: from 29 October 2026, Wellcome will accept applications only from lead applicants at eligible administering organisations in the UK and in low- and middle-income countries in Africa, South Asia and South-East Asia. Applications submitted on or before 28 October 2026 are assessed under the current location rules.
