Despite decades of effort, access to and uptake of routine vaccination services in Africa remains limited, and vaccine-preventable diseases continue to pose a major public health challenge. The growing adoption of implementation research in global health offers immunization programmes new tools for tackling long-standing barriers to vaccination. This primer, aimed at country-level immunization decision-makers and implementers, explains what implementation research is and the value it can add when integrated across the immunization landscape, from identifying contextual barriers to designing sustainable, context-appropriate, and practical strategies. The authors argue that embedding implementation research into all aspects of immunization programming can help fast-track programmatic success and improve vaccination outcomes across the continent.
