Programmatic Reporting

What's owed to a sponsor once an award is active, and who's responsible for it.

Progress & Technical Reports

The Principal Investigator is responsible for submitting every progress or technical report a sponsor requires, on whatever cycle that sponsor sets — monthly, quarterly, annual, or a one-time final report. Reporting cycles vary by funder and sometimes by individual award, so check your award notice rather than assuming a standard schedule.

ORSPA's Post-Award team also helps the PI develop the routine reports a funder requires, and archives a copy of every submitted report against the award record. Some sponsors require these reports to be authorized or co-signed by ORSPA rather than submitted by the PI alone — check with your Post-Award contact before your first report is due.

Late Reports

A late progress or technical report can affect more than the one award it's attached to — sponsors track an institution's reporting record, and a pattern of late reports can affect future funding decisions institution-wide. If a report is going to be late, tell ORSPA as soon as you know, rather than after the due date has passed.

When a sponsor changes a reporting due date, notify ORSPA immediately so the award record stays accurate.

Contract Deliverables

Where a report is listed as a deliverable under a contract rather than a grant, it must go to both the sponsor and ORSPA, and any change to its content or timing needs a sponsor-approved contract amendment first — a report can't simply be reshaped after the fact.
